Joy Community, Zambia - a brief history

The Joy Community is in Ndola, Zambia.
Below is a brief history of how we became involved with our brothers and sisters over there. Click the link in the right menu to read Latima's blog.
-
Jan Moir heads to Zambia in 2001 as part of a Diocesan visit having been given 100 pounds for a good cause.
-
Jan meets Latima Bupe at the start, and again at end of week, decides to give him the money for Joy Community School building project (Oct 2001).
Having already made the bricks on faith, they now have money to start building the school.
-
Jan never asks for money, but it pours in at church and in the Parish, so it is regularly forwarded to Latima in Zambia.
-
The building goes up and in Feb 2002, glass goes in the windows.
-
February 2003 the school officially opens with a roof on the building!
-
Late 2003 the school room has desks and is packed with children daily.
- In 2005:
- Electricity was connected to the school;
- Latima's vision of giving the children one meal a day commences in 2005 with the installation of a grinding mill;
- Water-borne toilets installed;
- December - the borehole for water was officially commissioned.
-
In February 2008 Latima sadly passed away following another Malaria attack, the work there is being continued by others there, but he is sorely missed.
- Jan, Judi and Kay visited in Sept 2008, taking funds raised here to help out, and on returning have formed a committee here to formalise our determination to continue to help our brothers and sisters in this community.
